Marble is a delicate natural stone which is elegant in nature and is an excellent choice for flooring needs. In India, we mostly see Indian marble stone floors or Italian Marble Stone floors.
Marble floors have lustrous property i.e. they can emit shine and gloss and look neat and clean. Once the marble floor is laid, it needs to be completely polished using diamond flexible pads and polishing compounds. This shine can last from one year to a few years depending on the footfall and dust levels. With people walking over marble floors, the dust attached to the sole of the shoes scratch the marble surface, reducing the overall shine. For marble floors to shine, it needs to not have any scratches for the perfect mirror effect.
Marble floor polishing is a service which includes mainly four steps – grinding, honing, polishing and buffing. Each step is important to ensure that the floor does not have scratches and has high gloss.
For floors with deep scratches or significant damage, grinding is the first step. This involves using coarse diamond pads to even out the surface and remove deep imperfections. Grinding of the floor involves using high abrasive flexible pads with a single disc floor machine to remove any undulations and scratches. The flexible pads cut the marble surface from the top and brings out a fresh layer of marble from beneath. Generally, diamond pads are used in increasing sequence such as 100, 200, and 400. For polishing new marble floors, the surface needs to be levelled to remove lippage and unevenness between marble slabs and so another step of levelling will be done before grinding.
Honing marble surface involves using less abrasive diamond pads to smoothen out the surface and correct any minor imperfections. It is achieved by using pads 800, 1500 and 3000. Honing is done to also prepare the floor for polishing.
Polishing of marble floors is a detailed process designed to enhance the shine and beauty of marble surfaces, restoring their original lustre and extending their lifespan. This is done with the help of a polishing powder compound which helps achieve high gloss on all kinds of Indian and Italian marble floors. The polish gets absorbed by the floor and creates a shiny layer on the surface.
Buffing is using a liquid spray crystalliser such as Diversey Terranova to enhance the floor shine along with steel wool to finish the process with high gloss. Liquid shine enhances the gloss levels of the floor and highlights the texture and veins of the marble.
